Yes - pharmacist immunisers at Harpers Pharmacy can administer the varicella (chickenpox) vaccine to eligible customers.

Can I get a chickenpox (varicella) vaccination at Harpers Pharmacy?

Chickenpox Vaccination

A vaccination that helps protect against chickenpox (varicella), given by a trained and authorised pharmacist immuniser.

Chickenpox (varicella) commonly causes:

  • An itchy, blistering rash
  • Mild fever
  • Tiredness and loss of appetite

Key benefits:

  • Helps protect against chickenpox and its complications
  • Convenient — no GP visit needed for eligible customers
  • Administered by a trained, authorised pharmacist immuniser

What is the Chickenpox Vaccination?

This service may be suitable if you:

  • Don’t have confirmed prior immunity or vaccination history
  • Want to reduce your risk of chickenpox and its complications

This isn’t suitable during pregnancy or for people who are immunocompromised without medical clearance — discuss with your pharmacist or GP first.

Who May Benefit from Chickenpox Vaccination?

Chickenpox vaccination is given as a course of two doses, spaced several weeks apart, and current Australian Immunisation guidelines set out the recommended interval. As a live vaccine, it isn’t suitable during pregnancy or for people who are significantly immunocompromised without medical clearance — your pharmacist will check this with you first.

Common side effects include soreness at the injection site and, occasionally, a mild rash. Ask your pharmacist for the relevant Consumer Medicines Information (CMI) for full details.

Important Information

Before Your Vaccination

Be prepared to discuss:

  • Whether you’ve had chickenpox before, or been vaccinated previously
  • Whether you could be pregnant
  • Any conditions or medicines that affect your immune system

During Your Vaccination

As chickenpox vaccine is a live vaccine, your pharmacist will check for pregnancy or immune-suppressing conditions before proceeding.

You’ll then receive the injection, usually as a course of two doses several weeks apart, with a brief monitoring period afterward.

What to Expect During Your Visit

Is the vaccine safe?

Vaccination safety and side-effect information is provided at your consultation, and further detail is available via the Australian Immunisation Handbook.

What are the common side effects?

Your pharmacist will discuss possible side effects with you at the time of vaccination.

Can adults get the chickenpox vaccine, or is it just for children?

Adults without prior immunity can also be vaccinated - it's not limited to children.
